Football has been a way of life for Tre Jenkins since he was 6 years old. “Sports have always fascinated me,” says the St. Mary’s senior who also plays basketball and runs track. “And football has taught me dedication – if I am dedicated, there is nothing I can’t do.”
With aspirations of continuing his football career at a D1 college, Tre also wants to earn a degree in Computer Engineering. “I love games that challenge my mind and are difficult to solve as well as building things. In the future, if my football career comes to an end, I see myself working at Apple designing new software,” he says.
Recently named to the Starbucks/Black Hat Football All-209 1st Team Defense, sports journalist and football blogger Richard Estrada (AKA: Black Hat Football) says, “The 6-foot-1, 205-pound senior finishes his two-year career with 172 tackles and six interceptions, helping the Rams to a Sac-Joaquin Section Division 1 Title and State Bowl in 2016 and then a return to the Section final in 2017. Tre Jenkins was voted the Tri-City Athletic League MVP this season, and also provided rushing and receiving yards.”
Perhaps one little-known fact about Tre Jenkins is that he is a twin. Fraternal twin brother, Drew, also plays football as Defensive Back, Cornerback, and Safety for the St. Mary’s Rams. The two are extremely close and count on each other for support on and off the field. “Playing with my brother is like having another person exactly like you on the field. Drew is someone I can always count on for help on formations and there’s always a healthy dose of competition between us in practice. We both have a need for competing against each other for every little thing which is good and bad,” laughs Tre. When asked who the better athlete is, he says, “I will always think that I am, but Drew has made a lot of improvements from freshman year and really became a top player for our team this season. We have the best relationship. Whenever we argue, we are find in a couple minutes and laughing again. Football has brought us a lot of memorable moments. I’ll never forget standing on the field at Sac State a few weeks ago during the playoffs looking at each other knowing that this could be the last time we play football together – and it was. We’ve been doing this since we were 7.”
How do you successfully juggle the demands of school, practice, and games?
My parents always put academics first and I’ve become used to the student/athlete lifestyle. If my academics are handled, everything else will fall in place.
What are your strengths physically and mentally as a Defensive Back/Wide Receiver?
I use my size as well as my speed in these positions. Watching film always gets me in the focused mindset.
How have you improved as an athlete from year to year?
Over the years, I am putting more effort into technique instead of athleticism.
How do you prepare for football on and off-season?
I train by lifting weights and by focusing on technique and speed.
What is your philosophy on discipline?
My philosophy on discipline is that if there is no self-discipline, then nothing can get accomplished.
What is one word or phrase that you hope your teammates use to describe you?
“Spark Plug” – if things aren’t going our way, I hope they look to me to be the jump start that we need to get things going.
What is the biggest challenge you’ve had to face this year as a student or athlete and how did you overcome this challenge?
The biggest challenge this year had to be the QB changes that we had due to injury. My team helped out the new QBs by always going above and beyond and doing extra.
What is your biggest regret of the season?
The biggest this season, personally, was not being able to play as well in our last game as I wanted to (referring to the Rams’ loss to Folsom High School in the Division 1 playoffs last December 2).
What is the biggest lesson that you've learned from your coach this year?
Our coach (Tony Franks) has always told us that no matter what happens, there are ten other guys on that field that are your brothers and to always just play RAM football.

What is your most memorable moment of the season?
My most memorable moment of this season was playing Mater Dei High School. Even though we didn’t win, it showed our team that we won’t back down to anyone, no matter the stage.
Is there anyone that you'd like to thank or acknowledge and why?
I thank God for allowing me to play the sport I love. I also thank my family as well as my team for always supporting me and allowing me to rely on them.
